North Carolina-based novelty store and gourmet food emporium Southern Season was acquired by a Delaware-based company that owns several gourmet businesses, an article of the Gourmet Retailer reported on August 22.
Calvert Retail LP bought Southern Season on August 19 for $3.5 million at an auction. Southern Season sought Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection in June, a few months after it suffered financial troubles. The company was auctioned after attempts to obtain new capital and restructure the business proved unsuccessful. The deal with Calvert Retail was immediately secured on the day Judge Benjamin Kahn approved the liquidation of Southern Season. Calvert Retail is expected to take over the main store of Southern Season in Chapel Hill.
